What this document is

A letter in which the parents or legal guardian of a minor consent to the child applying for a Thai visa — including a Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) as the dependant of a DTV holder — and travelling to and staying in Thailand.

There is no government form for this consent, and Thai embassies ask for it in different ways. This is an unofficial FoxDocs template: it only states the facts you enter and leaves a box for a notary or apostille if your embassy requires one.

When it is needed

  • the Royal Thai Embassy in Vienna (e-Visa) asks applicants under 18 for a birth certificate and a consent form signed by both parents with copies of their passports — or by the other parent if one parent applies together with the child;
  • the Royal Thai Embassy in Bern asks, for children under 20 travelling without their parents, for a consent letter in English or Thai that is legalised;
  • DTV dependants are the spouse and children under 20 of a DTV holder; age of majority in Thailand is 20.

Other embassies may ask for less or more. Check the e-Visa page of your embassy (and your airline’s rules for minors).

What the letter contains

  • the embassy, place and date;
  • the child's name, date and place of birth, nationality and passport;
  • who consents: both parents, or one parent with sole custody / the legal guardian;
  • details of each parent: name, relationship, nationality, passport or ID, contacts;
  • the visa (DTV or other), the period of stay and the address in Thailand;
  • who the child travels with, and the accompanying adult if any;
  • the consent statement, signatures and a “Notary / apostille” box.

What to attach

  • the child's birth certificate (or adoption certificate);
  • copies of the parents' passports or ID cards;
  • if one parent signs alone — the court order or other document on sole custody;
  • for a DTV dependant — the DTV of the parent who holds it and the other DTV documents.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an official Thai parental consent form for a visa?

No. Thai embassies do not publish a single form for foreign minors’ visas, and the e-Visa system only asks you to upload documents. This is an unofficial FoxDocs template.

Do both parents have to sign?

Usually yes. If one parent has sole custody or the child has a legal guardian, that person signs alone and attaches the court order or custody document.

Does the consent need to be notarised or apostilled?

It depends on the embassy. Bern, for example, asks for a legalised consent letter for children under 20 travelling without parents. The template has a box for the notary or apostille.

Up to what age is a child considered a minor?

In Thailand a person comes of age at 20, and DTV dependants are children under 20. Some embassies (Vienna) apply their consent rule to applicants under 18.

Is the consent needed if the child travels with one parent?

Often yes: the parent who does not travel gives consent. Vienna asks for the other parent’s consent and passport copy when one parent applies with the child.

Can the child travel with another adult?

Yes. Name the accompanying adult in the letter; the parents agree that the child travels in his or her care. Airlines may have their own rules for unaccompanied minors.

Does the letter replace the visa application?

No. The visa application is made online at thaievisa.go.th; the consent letter is uploaded as a supporting document.
